Chinese Drywall Update
November 25, 2009

Three preliminary reports issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) found that there is indeed a link between Chinese Drywall and corroded metals.

Between the years of 2005 and 2007 drywall was imported from China to make up for the lack of product due to the multitude of hurricanes and the incredible need for materials caused by the housing boom.  Since this time nearly 2,100 complaints of a sulfer like smell that permeates throughout the home, corroded metals (including pipes and wiring) and respiratory problems in homeowners whose houses were built using Chinese Drywall, have been made.  Many of these homeowners have been forced to move out of their homes.  Insurance companies will not got involved, in fact in many cases once a homeowner presents their cases to their insurance companies, the companies refuse to renew their policy due to a pre-existing condition!

Now that the CPSC has acknowledged the link between the drywall and the complaints, the next step is...what to do?  Scott Wolfson, the CPSC's director of information and public affairs has stated the the Chinese are willing to aid in the investigation "They're committed to helping us with the technical side of this investigation," he said.

Although this is a step in the right direction, many homeowner's are not surprised.  They have known all along that this link existed and while all these tests and investigations are continuing, there are still no answers.

Florida Senator, Bill Nelson, is one of the many that is not surprised by the outcome. "I am very disappointed with the whole process, and especially that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) can't say whether drywall is harmful to people's health," he told CNN in a recent interview, "Common sense says otherwise, but we still lack definitive answers."
