As if housing market in Florida isn't bad enough, it appears that the drywall that was imported from China between 2004 and 2007 to make up for the lack of building materials needed during the housing boom, is contaminated with Strontium sulfide. Strontium sulfide emits a corrosive gas that not only corrodes electric wiring, but is the possible cause of some health issues as well!
The Florida Department of Health claims that the levels of strontium sulfide being emitted from the drywall poses no "immediate health threat", however, studies are still being conducted to determine any health risks involved in the use of this product. I'm not quite sure what no "immediate health threat" means, unless it means that we should not worry about any health risks at the moment, we should wait until we are sick, but declining property values seem to be the more immediate issue at hand! Since the chemical in the drywall is corroding the electric wiring, this includes appliances, computer wires and a/c coils, homeowners fear that this could affect the property values of their homes.
Humidity and heat are the two main factors that contribute to the odors being emitted from the drywall, which could explain why the issues were noticed in Florida first. A few things to look out for, are a sulfurous odor, black wiring and possibly headaches and/or respiratory problems. If you suspect that there is an issue with Chinese Drywall in your home, consult with a home inspecting professional to determine any safety precautions that could be necessary.
